“This is a song about a person I love!” Yungblud loudly proclaims at the start of the track, before the heavy-pounding instruments kick in.
What follows is an unapologetically loud anthem, an anthem for the bisexuals one could say, about growing in confidence, about becoming happy with one’s own identity.
Over the course of the track with distorted, shouty vocals, Youngblud describes his experience of living in a world of oppression and judgmental individuals causing him to be “locked in a closet”, he is no longer afraid and is now “coming out”.
This whole new attitude is exciting for Yungblud, especially now that he’s found the person that he loves, but he still has a bit to learn and to get used to as he asks his new love to “take it easy” repeatedly and comments on her being “so hard to please”.
But at the same time, he doesn’t care – he proclaims that she’s “got my heart in her hands like a headlock” and that “she’s gonna suck on my strawberry lipstick”.
Yungblud’s newest single leaves a strong impact on the listener, you’ll find yourself wanting to scream along and head bang aggressively; when live music returns it’s going to be absolute chaos when this song is finally performed live.
Yungblud has revealed his second album will be coming out this year, date still unspecified, in follow-up to his debut album, 21st Century Liability, released in 2018 and 2019’s EP, The Underrated Youth.
If we can learn anything from Strawberry Lipstick, this new album is going to be insane and more unapologetic than ever, and while his previous works were already loud and unapologetic there’s something different about this new era –Yungblud is now more confident than ever.
In comparison to 21st Century Liability, where the album cover shows him in a straight-jacket, the imagery with Strawberry Lipstick shows him burning that same straight-jacket and now proudly wearing punk make-up and a union jack dress, along with dyed hair spikes.
What we can take away from this: Yungblud isn’t taking any prisoners, he is unapologetically himself and he doesn’t give a fuck about what you think!
