Manchester post-punk band, The Membranes, have released an EP in collaboration with Kitty Lectro featuring remixes of their song Nocturnal.
The EP consists of three tracks; two remixes done by Kitty Lectro (Kitty Lectro Remix and Meow Meow Money Remix) as well as the original version of the song from their album What Nature Gives...Nature Takes Away.
The remix tracks themselves are a strange but brilliant mash up of two very different genres; post-punk and dark-wave goth, a type of thing that you would expect to hear in an underground rock nightclub filled to the brim with every type of person from the alternative music scene, from scene kids to goths to the old punks to pop-punk kids, all drinking and swaying along erratically but happily as the songs play in the background.
It's fair to say that remixes can be hit or miss; either they're uninspiring and bland or they can give songs a new lease of life and identity, but there's no concern hear as these remixes fall into the latter.
So how did this collaboration come about?
According to frontman, John Robb, it was a want to further expand on the themes of Nocturnal: "It is (Nocturnal) from our new double album 'What Nature Gives...Nature Takes Away' and examines the beauty and violence of nature, in which we took our bass-driven post-punk and added choirs to it to create an epic brooding soundtrack to the theme of nature itself and its desperate struggle to survive the human race's hell bent determination to destroy it."
"Nocturnal is our death disco dance with Pan, or our dark Dionysian dislocation of the sense that has been remixed to shadowy dance floor brilliance by Kitty Lectro."
The Membranes were originally formed in Blackpool in 1977 and over the course of 13 years they released a range of records that would go on to influence artists such as Steve Albini, Swans and Sonic Youth.
They went on hiatus in 1990 for 20 years where they finally reunited after My Bloody Valentine (who previously supported them) convinced them to return to the stage for the ATP festival.
Since reuniting they have put out two records.
