Going back a few months, alternative music publications announced that MOD SUN and Avril Lavigne were releasing a collaboration together, resulting in multiple laugh emojis on Facebook as they mocked Miss Lavigne for working with a rapper, calling MOD SUN a joke and “not a real artist”. Fast forward to Internet Killed the Rockstar and, well, who’s laughing now?
What we have here is a brilliantly catchy album with each track having it’s own individual sound, an album that will become a classic in alternative music in years to come. People tend to forget that music and it’s genres are constantly changing and evolving, and it’s not a bad thing. Unless you want everything to sound the same? How boring would that be?
The album itself is very reminiscent of 2000s pop-punk, like think of The All-American Rejects, whilst at the same time is an ode to more modern-day pop-punk, such as ‘Bones’ reminding us of ‘I Can Feel You’ by The Faim. Plus mixing in some EDM and pop instrumentals; you’ve got yourself a killer album.
Including a range of topics from the “fuck you” with ‘Karma’, to the “I still love you” with ‘Flames’ (featuring the legend that is Avril herself), as well stories covering the more serious topics of overcoming addiction with ‘Prayer’, and a loving tribute to his late father with ‘Smith’. This album has a bit of everything and there are no skippable tracks. Except maybe for ‘Pornstar’…a tongue in cheek track that’s a bit cringy. Fun, but cringy.
Overall, Internet Killed the Rockstar is a stand-out album. We can’t say more apart from tell you that you need to listen to it now. Do it, or risk missing out.
